In August 2013, a pod of ten (10) humpback whales followed schools of anchovies into Avila Harbor along the Central California Coast, midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Thousands of tourists got to witness a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle over a two-week span until they all - whales, pelicans, and presumably schools of fish - suddenly disappeared. I was in a Zodiac inflatable boat shooting photos from a mere 50 yds. away.
